Design Production/Digital//Silent Movie//Motion Graphics Idea Generation Workshop.

In today's 'Silent Movie' workshop session we looked at the process of storyboarding and experimenting with the visual communication and narrative of a motion graphics piece.

Selecting typefaces and a single letterform from our word and/or research, we went on to explore various different exercises in image production- again, as a narrative- not as a "flip book"- highlighting, at this point, merely the key frames within the motion graphics piece.

I chose the letters 's' and 'f' from my two words 'stretch' and 'float'- with the first exercise (top four images) being quick exercises in creating a minimum of five visualisations for each word (I aimed for twenty and got them done in the nick of time, yay!).

Whether or not we used a frame at this stage was optional, and I decided to go with this format in order to get used to working in this dimension and frame mechanism- to familiarise myself for the later stages of the project.

In the afternoon session, we went on to produce five x five square grid frame sequences per page, (images five-ten) with varying criteria to meet within the visual communication of our letterforms:

Images 5 & 6//Change of form, changing dimension/scale, changing the visual quality of the letterform.

Again, the option to change the typeface we used was optional at this point, but I wanted to test myself- and by applying these limits was forced into thinking carefully about the ways I could manipulate the letterform. I still would have liked to have been more creative with my designs, though it was a satisfactory start.

Images 7 & 8//Lateral or vertical positioning/changing position (orientation, axis)/fixed form, pt size, scale.

Images 9 & 10//Left-Right/Top-Bottom/Dimensions and Space

I found this design process particularly interesting- creating a high-impact design which utilises the third and forth dimensions- and being able to accurately represent and depict the sort of effects through key frames and camera effects we will be able to apply to our designs in Abode After Effects.

Overall, today was really enjoyable- and I'm feeling quite enthusiastic about the potential and design possibilities that this project holds- it'll be great to experiment more with the design outcomes, and am already feeling really inspired about outcomes, effects and the overall design of my motion graphics shorts.

A few shots from the final annotated motion graphics key frame sequences- complete with arrows and brief instructions about how the images will be visualised in the final motion outcomes.
