Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//NEW Brief.
Re-written brief, taking into reflection the past week's research and findings, and consideration for the finer details of the brief, and my aspirations for my product outcomes- hopefully making it a little snappier (and much easier to read as a result!)
BRIEF
Create a range of illustrative designs to promote the classic 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' to a new, contemporary audience in a bold, visually communicative range of designs.
BACKGROUND//CONSIDERATIONS
Consider my target market and the retail consumer (audience) of 5-11 year old children, and their parents, and what would most effectively appeal to both audiences.
Research the history and visual communication of The Grimms Brother's Fairy Tales since first published 200 years ago.
Research existing Penguin/Puffin "in house design" to see how this may influence design outcomes.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS
Produce an extensive body of research into the history of the Grimm's Brothers Fairy Tales and the illustrative communication of their work throughout the years.
Produce an extensive range of design developments and experimentations.
Produce a range of design outcomes which promote the publication of the book in an informative and persuasive manner.
DELIVERABLES
Produce both promotional/marketing outcomes in print and digital formats such as invitations to promo events, printed advertising, social networking media/eBooks, etc.
Produce a book cover design with a consideration for type and image throughout the book based on ten Grimm's Fairy Tale stories to produce in a variety of formats, both printed and screen-based.

Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Concept Rationale.
My written concept statement/rationale for my Product/Range/Distribution brief within the Design Practice II module, looking at my plans for the future of the brief, design outcomes I hope to achieve, etc.
Looking forward to discussing my ideas with the group in our tutorial concept crit tomorrow, and hopefully receiving a few opinions about the potential expansion and development of my proposed brief.

Now decided, a full list of the ten fairy tales that I have chosen to work towards within this project, along with the main illustrative cover design for the Grimm's Fairy Tale cover, to sit alongside the text throughout the book- with one "title" illustration, and two images alongside each of the individual stories.
I will go on to source each of the original stories in order to establish the most appropriate means of visual communication of the stories from the subject matter and content of each.

After giving the shop floor manager, Neil, a call at the weekend, after Uni today I popped into my local (Albion Street, Leeds) to take some photographs of the store to propose a launch of my rebranded design publication for Grimm's Fairy Tales (which will also go on to be promoted at the Hay Literary Festival)- as well as looking at the signage throughout the shop, and how this could influence some of my promotional designs.
Obviously, just some quick snap shots for now that would need a considerable amount of editing within the context of finalised design boards- though I have been given permission to go back into the store and take more photographs, to get lighting and composition a little more appropriate in time for my mock up designs also.
Really interesting to see the variations of signage- and it'll certainly given me a good opportunity to experiment with in context of the Waterstones branding (which, at the moment is going from an unusual transaction as the FS Alberta Pro typeface that was introduced for the logo design in 2010 is being reverted back to the original Baskerville logo this year, so now is an awkward mixture of the two), which, hopefully, should be quite fitting to my proposed black and white colour scheme for my design outcomes.
* Another idea that came from my trip out today was to possibly create a cover design for an audio book as well as the paper/eBook editions. I don't want to overwhelm myself with work too much, and know it's certainly quality over quantity, but time given, I think this would be a great addition to my project range. I loved audio books as a child, and truth be told, I still do now. I think there's a great market out there for this product.

Survey research and market analysis put out at the end of last week to try and generate some opinions towards the design development, content, and concepts of my rebranding and promotional design for the Penguin/Puffin Grimm's Fairy Tales book/product range.

Notes from Thursday's Concept Workshop II, which, unfortunately, I've only just got round to blogging. Looking more into our concept development, and specifically looking at ways we can expand our product concept/context, range and design possibilities.

5 PROBLEMS THAT I AM INTERESTED IN SOLVING
- How can I get children to read more?
- How do you promote an event/product?

- How can young audiences by introduced to classic fairy tales?
- How can a subject matter (Grimms Fairy Tales) be effectively communicated in a retail environment.
5 MESSAGES I WANT TO DELIVER
- Books are to be celebrate and that the age of printed (book) designs are NOT DEAD.
- Children should be encouraged to read, and be read to, from an early age.
- Books should be accesible to people globally- through both print and screen-based devices.
- Classic literature can still be relevant in contemporary society.
- Paper is to be celebrated! (Paper craft designs).
5 REASONS WHY
- Because of the history, practicality and enjoyment that can be earnt from reading fictional books- encouraging imaginative and creative childhoods/adults.
- To increase potential intelligence, creativity and imagination- as well as a hunger to learn new things and have a fascination in the world.

- The first collection of Grimm's Brothers folk tales were published in 1812 (200 years ago, and are still commonly shared and loved today).

Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Product considerations.
A note about my design concept...
Originally for my major product outcomes, looking at creating different cover versions for a selected range of Grimm's Fairy Tale books (as well as proposing others, if given more time), I have decided that this isn't the most appropriate idea.
Not only would be printing costs be very expensive for each of the individual books, but each story is also far too short to warrant it's own book without resembling an early reader's 'Ladybird'-like book that I used to read when I was around three, and not particularly suited for my target market of 5-11 year olds.
Therefore, I have decided to work towards creating one condensed book with some of the favourite Grimms stories within one singular book publication- which I can then go on to print in paperback, hardback and special collector's edition- which makes a great deal more sense from a retail and publication perspective, as well as making sure I'm eating more than gruel until the summer!

Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Proposed Brief/Rationale.
My first draft and proposed brief for the self initiated Design Practice II, Product/Range/Distribution brief. Working towards generating a new, branded range of Grimms Fairy Tales books which appeal to both my target audience of 5-11 year old, as well as the retail consumer, their parents- working on both a print based and screen-based design outcome, such as eBooks- iPads, Kindles, and so on.
I will also aim to create a promotional range of designs to advertise the book range including outdoor advertising, web banners, stationary mailshots, and so on.
Design Practice II//Workshop Task I/Concept Development.
The first workshop task session delivered today by tutor Fred Bates, evaluating the existing competition briefs online, to develop and create our own design briefs for completion by the end of the module. Using our responses to these questions and tasks to develop our understanding and removing restraints that they may currently hold.

D&AD: LITTLE WHITE LIES
1. Appeals to my particular interest and knowledge of films and the film industry.
2. A chance to work solely with illustration (a rarity) which will allow me to be really experimental with my design outcomes and development.
3. 'Little White Lies', the company for which the brief has been written for, is a wonderful magazine, with a great fan base- therefore, would really appeal to me as an addition in my portfolio for my own satisfaction as well as recognition in the industry as a proposed brief.
4. No contraints in terms of the illustrative style used- can experiment with both hand-rendered and digital aspects.
5. Working in an editorial context, a design medium that I would like to learn a lot more about, and actively design for to enrich my portfolio and my experience in this area.
ISTD: IT HAPPENED ON THIS DAY
1. Research focused (a particular strength and interest within my design practice).
2. Allow me to experiment with typography, but in a more creative and image-like way than some of the other briefs that ISTD had to offer.
3. I'm really interested in social history, so as well as the research side of the brief, I would also, undoubtedly feel enriched with spending time working towards this particular focus and additional knowledge.
4. I potentially could work quite closely with infographic design (a natural partner to editorial and typographic design layouts) which is something I am really interested in, and would be keen to develop further.
5. The overall design outcomes are really open and quite inspiring as a result- could work photographically, with print, motion graphics- or all of them! The potential resolutions are really open... and exciting because of it.
YCN: FEDRIGONI
1. I am reasonably familiar with the company, and feel that I have a good level of knowledge for their in house design style and paper ranges which may help influence my research of the project and finalised outcome as a result.
2. The outcome, as is the company, is paper based- something I have a real love for, and feel as though my strengths lie in.
3. The brief is, currently, focused on a fashion-based outcome (a suggested target market/audience), which is something completely new to me, and would be a great challenge to work in a complete different design field.
4. Promoting their 'Imaginative colours' range- I am a huge fan of colour, colour theory and psychology, and feel as though I could use my understanding and strengths in this area to my best advantage.
5. Proposed suggestion of working towards an event/promotional design- something which I have little experience in, so would certainly be a good challenge in terms of my current knowledge and understanding of the design needs and requirements of this outcome.
PENGUIN DESIGN AWARD 2012: PUFFIN CHILDREN'S PRIZE (BROTHER'S GRIMM BOOK COVER)
1. Pretty much my PERFECT design brief! So suited to my tastes and aspirations for the industry.
2. Love literature, and the Grimm Brothers fairy tales collection is one of my favourite book(s) (series).
3. Penguin is one of the companies that I would LOVE to work for in the future, though are notoriously difficult to get a placement with. Designing with them in mind and to have a piece in my portfolio would be a great step towards generating this style of work and aimed towards Penguin's design needs.
4. As a brief directed at children, it will largely be an illustrative brief (how I interpret it at least!) to be visually communicative and engaging to this target market that I am keen to work with in particular upon graduating and in my professional practice.
5. Could work with some really interesting design outcomes combining both illustrative and typographic design.

The classic Grimm Brothers stories- research which are the most popular, and though I can propose that a full series of the 200+ books would be designed and printed, focus on a small, select series (12 books?) to be realistic in generating my designs, and the time in which I have to dedicate to them.
