Design Practice II//Recruitment Ads.

In today's workshop session, immediately after the workshop briefing, we were given the task to create two A3 poster designs over a two hour period (including taking a lunch break). One of which would advertise ourselves as a designer, with five different qualities you had to offer as a designer, and another poster design with the top five things that we ourselves were looking for in a creative partner. However, we were to keep the designs anonymous, so, that during the pin up session the reactions to both the content and the designs were completely natural and as unbiased as possible.

I went with a "lonely hearts" newspaper column theme which I think represented my playfulness and concept development well, and which advertised for what I was looking for- someone typographically driven with an interest in editorial design that would help to balance out my skills set- image (illustration & photography)- although, on reflection,  I felt that it perhaps didn't necessarily advertise my own style very well (though a compromise had to be made in the short time frame given). We were then assigned a set of tasks throughout the rest of the afternoon, information and details of which are written below...

TASK I

- Select the design(s) of others and pick your favourite a) content and b) design and write five reasons for your choosing on a sheet of paper for each and stick them alongside the designs pinned up on the wall.

TASK II

- Select the design in which you feel that you have the most to offer in terms of the correlation with the wants of the designer in the "looking for..." advertisements. Only ONE sheet of paper can be assigned to each poster design- FIGHT FOR IT!

TASK III

Select the design in which you feel that you have the most to offer in terms of the correlation with the wants of the designer in the "looking for..." advertisements. Only ONE sheet of paper can be assigned to each poster design- FIGHT FOR IT!

// Opportunity 2- still, FIGHT FOR IT HARDER!

//MY PERSONAL FEEDBACK...

TASK I

A sheet of paper received for CONTENT (hooray!). No name, but notes included...

- Motivated
- Fun Ad
- Intelligent (Quote)
- Passion for type
- FUN- approachable

Really pleased with this feedback, as it is what I certainly wanted to portray in my ad. From the response of why others felt that designs were really positive, one of the key phrases was "to the point"- perhaps I could have improved on this by cutting back the waffling. Still, nevertheless, I was happy with this response.

TASK II/III

Two sheets of paper (YES!) for what my fellow designers had to offer, which read...

(CHARLIE)

- Love the pub and coffee visits
- Highly motivated
- Come in early and start late
- Confident with software
- Full of fun

(CHLOE)

- I am always going to work hard
- I enjoy layout
- Happy to work
- Good sense of humour
- Enjoy Uni banter

// I was really flattered to be approached by both Chloe and Charlie at the end of the session, though decided to work with Charlie (though Chloe would, by no means make a bad partner!- With great experience of working with her at the beginning of last year). We had talked a little about possibly working together last week (before we knew about the recruitment process) and the fact that he chose my design as a "have to offer" felt like it was definitely the right option. I feel, in terms of design outcomes, we are quite equal (as well as in terms of grades), we're both hard working and mutually enjoy both type and image (although specialising in type). Really excited to get working now!
