OUGD202 DESIGN PRODUCTION- DIGITAL//MODULE BRIEFING
20 CREDITS
ASSESSMENT BRIEFING 01/02/12, 9.30am
MODULE DEADLINE 08/02/12, 1pm
MODULE AIMS
The aims of the module are:
* To develop a specialist approach to the use of practical and conceptual research in the development of a body of individual work.
* To develop and apply a practical and conceptual understanding of design processes involved in the production of work for digital media/electoronic delivery.
* To identify and develop key practical and conceptual skills in the effective production of individual design solutions in response to this brief.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1// Demonstrate the ability to plan and carry out radical research in the development and research of disctinctly personal responses to this brief.
(PROJECT MANAGEMENT, RESEARCH & DOCUMENTATION)
2// Select, develop and evaluate source material, primary and secondary research to inform the creative development of design solutions.
(CONCEPTUAL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & EVALUATION)
3// Explore, manipulate and critically evaluate appropriate media, processes and technologies in the creation and presentation of work.
(PRACTICAL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & EVALUATION)
4// Demonstrate practical and conceptual dexterity in the use of appropriate techniques, processes, media, and approaches to the production of practical work.
(SELECTION, PRODUCTION & RESOLUTION)
INDICATIVE CONTENT
There will be the opportunity to develop content that integrates practical, conceptual, and research skills focusing on Design for Screen base delivery (motion graphics, TV, idents, title sequences, and kinetic typography).
You will be expected to develop an appropriate level of technical understanding in the production of screen based outcomes whilst further developing your individual practice towards graphic design or illustration.
There will be the opportunity to select from briefs that will encourage you to develop a creative and critical investigation of the intention, context, and function of digital technologies including whether they are used to inform, instruct, educate, document, narrate, etc.
Studio sessions, crits and individual tutorials will be supported by appropriate technical workshops sessions and drop in.
BRIEF// SCREEN & MOTION DESIGN
CONTEXT
Digital media (aka New Media and Multimedia) is a broad term that encompasses communication that combines graphics, moving image and sound. It often involves some level of interactivity and is fast becoming integral to our every day lives. Consider the growth of digital interactive TV, DVD and Blue-ray technology, mobile phones, PDA's and the ipod touch as well as the ubiquitous internet with it's diverse content. How much of visual information is communicated to us on screen?
As new on-screen media evolves, many designers will increasingly find themselves working within a constantly developing field of digital media. Some, but not all, of design skills and principles can be transferred directly from print to screen based design. During this module we will focus on the design processes involved when considering the screen as a format, context, and method of distribution.
BRIEF
During this module you will be asked to apply your existing and developing understanding of visual language, visual research and visual thinking to set problems. These problems will focus on:-
- Strategies for idea generation and planning when developing solutions for screen based delivery.
- Approaches to visual thinking and the visual investigation/communication of ideas.
- The development of visual solutions to problems through the investigation of screen based formats, technologies and design considerations.
- The introduction of practical workshop skills in After Effects, Story Boarding, Sequential Thinking, and project presentation.
STUDIO BRIEF 1- SILENT MOVIE
A series of study tasks and workshops will encourage you to explore approaches to communication through sequential thinking, story boarding and the use of Adobe After Effects. This body of work should demonstrate your ability to develop, produce and present technically competent design solutions through the considered
application of existing and newly acquired practical skills. See Studio
Brief 1 for further information.
STUDIO BRIEF 2- '10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...'
Develop a body of visual and contextual
research that helps you to establish your own opinions in response to
set design problems. This body of work should demonstrate your ability
to creatively explore a range of design solutions through the considered
application of existing and newly acquired conceptual, research and
development skills.
