A quick experiment applying texture overlays over my initial vector-based penguin illustrations, trying to give the characters a little more definition, and to make them more visually engaging. Quite like the outcome, going to try and generate my own hand-rendered overlays and textures (feathers, waves, etc) as well as photo overlays.
More experimentation needed.
