alphabet soup: task 2.


The Brief:

Design a typeface for a full alphabet and glyphs (a to z, !, ?, @, £, :,.) that represents the personality/character of your partner. You will discover their personality through a series of set questions.

Using your newfound appreciation of the anatomy of typographic forms and the wealth of research that you have already gathered, focus on the manipulation of exsisting letterforms in order to solve this problem.

Considerations:
THINK VISUALLY. Consider what he visual essence of your subject matter is and how best to communicate it using the process. What are the obvious responses? How can you go beyond these? How subtle can you be?

MAKE MISTAKES IN ORDER TO LEARN FROM THEM.

Practical Considerations:
EXPERIMENT with a range of possible line qualities, marks, colour and paper types. How will colour help with the communication? What papers can you work with? Do you need to draw, photocopy, photograph, collage, trace, or combine processes?

Your final resolution should read as convincing, well crafted and clearly presented typographic forms.

Background:
The alpha-numeric forms within typefaces and fonts are vast, Each has been designed in response to a specific problem, set of requirements or design needs. Clarity, legibility, ease of (re)production, usability and functionality are always considerations but the mood, personality, and tone of voice of these forms are just as important to the designer.
Investigating these relaionships can open up a wealth of visual and conceptual possibilities.

Mandatory Requirements:
The typeface that you create must be based upon an existing typeface that you will manipulate. Type must be laid out as such:

Deliverables:
A1 poster (tracing paper) (Hand drawn in black ink for final outcome)
Name badge for your partner (45mmx90mm) (no rules on the badge, go crazy!)

OTHER NOTES:
the typographic series needs to follow a logic- the letters need to work for every single letterform- not just the odd few!



The brief above was given to us this morning as an extension task of last week's 'Alphabet Soup' induction.
We were then assigned to pairs to discover information on one another, to learn about each others personalities, and to be able to develop our typeface from the knowledge gained...

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?
This form 2nd time round!

Considerations and particular favourite elements within typography:

1. Bright colours in contrast with neutrals.
2. Capitals.
3. Classic fonts, no "middle/old english".
4. Pastels.
5. Patterns/sequence/balance.

Along with the feedback in the questionnaire I recieved from Chloe, along with her points of particular interest, I believe that I will be able to create a strong, classic and lasting typeface series.

The brainstorming begins now...
