(Also called rubber bands) Stretchy rubber bands that are used to bind, gather and organise documents, papers, and various other materials.

2. YOGA

One of many yoga poses in which the body is stretched and manipulated in order to increase good health and flexibility in joints, muscles, etc.

3. STRETCH ARMSTRONG


Classic 1990's toy, the Stretch Armstrong was the ultimate stress-relief toy... allowing you to stretch the rubber material of the toy (what felt like) infinitely.

4. STRETCH LIMO




Stretch limo automobiles- popular for VIP events and parties.

5. ABILITIES/TALENTS




Working hard to achieve great things in a task is often referring to as "stretching yourself" as you are pushing your capabilities to the limit.

6. REACH




Reaching for an object/item often requires your body to stretch- if unable to reach the height (eg, reaching for a book on the top shelf in a library).

7. STRETCH MARKS




Stretch marks (tiny white lines on the skin) often emerge from rapid growth or weight gain- commonly found on the stomach, hips, etc.

8. TRIPOD (EXPANSION//HEIGHT)



Tripod arms and legs "stretch" by expanding and heightening/widening for optimum photographic opportunities.

9. LYCRA


Lycra is a man-made fabric with body contour stretch- commonly used in leotards, sportswear and other skin-tight clothing.


10. REFLEXOLOGY



In relfexology, certain pressure points of the foot are squeezed, stretched and pinched to relieve aches 
and stress ailments.

11. PREGNANCY




In pregnancy, the skin and uterus stretch to accommodate room for the baby growing inside the mother's body.


12. ELASTICATED WAIST



Elasticated waistbands are often designed into garments for comfort, or to fit a wide range of sizes and ages due to the stretch material used.

13. EARS




Stretched ears- where stretcher "plugs" are inserted into pierced ears, gradually increasing the mm size to widen and stretch the hole.

 

14. STRETCHERS (EARS)




Stretchers to be inserted into pierced ears to increase the size of the piercing hole.


15. LIP RING




Commonly used in African tribes, lip rings, like stretchers are used as a decorative body modification/art- stretching the diameter of the bottom lip.


16. STRETCH RACK (TORTURE IMPLEMENT//GRIM)




"The Rack" was a historical weapon of torture, to which it's victims would be tied up and stretched- breaking bones and dramatically deforming the body.

17. KERNING




Kerning- where the negative space between words is either increased or decreased- almost "stretching" the word to affect the visual communication and feel of what is being written/said.

18. CANVAS




Canvas material is stretched over wooden frames to showcase printed designs, or to be a surface to paint upon (traditionally used in Fine Art practice).

19. RUBBER



Rubber- a natural material with stretch and give- used in rubber rings, tires, etc.


20. SLINKY




The classic children's toy- the stretch of the slinky, with the aid of gravity helps it to bend, flex, move... and even cascade down a flight of stairs.

21. MOZZARELLA 




The stringy Italian cheese, Mozzarella, when processed, increases it's stretchy, stringy texture.


22. LEGS




Stretching is important to prevent injury and/or muscle strain before exercising.


23. NYLON




Nylon is a stretchy, man made fabric, usually used, like Lycra, (see post above) in skin-tight or body contour garments and materials.


24. MUSCLES




Stretching muscles before and after exercising to help prevent any avoidable strain or injury that
may otherwise occur.


25. PILATES



Much like Yoga- Pilates is a low impact exercise which helps to increase flexibility (stretch) and cardio health.


TASK IV// SITUATIONS

1. Stretching an elastic band over a pile of documents/papers.

2. Stretching and flexing your body into a yoga position.

3. Two children pulling on the arms, legs and body to stretch the 90's classic toy, 'Stretch Armstrong'.

4. Stretch limo- "stretched" appearance automobile, usually used for VIP, events and parties.

5. "Stretching" your capabilities in a task- pushing yourself to achieve success/working hard.

6. Stretching up to reach a book on a top shelf of a bookcase.
 
7. Stretch marks- white pale lines that appear on the skin when it is stretched through growth/weight gain.

8. Stretching and expanding a tripod to make the legs wider apart/more balanced/to make the camera positioning higher, etc.

9. Lycra is a stretchy, man made fabric- usually used for skin-tight clothing such as leotards or body contour evening dresses.

10. Stretching and manipulating the skin on the feet and the muscles in reflexology.

11. In pregnancy the uterus and stomach (appearance) stretch to accommodate room for the growing baby.

17. Kerning increases and decreases the negative space around letterforms in a word- almost a stretching action with negative and positive kerning.

18. Stretching canvas over a wooden frame for a printed image or fine art (painting onto a canvas).

19. Rubber is a stretchy, natural material- used in clothing, tires, etc.

20. 'Slinky' is the iconic children's toy- can be stretched, thrown and sprung to manipulate it's shape and movement (with the aid of gravity).
 
21. Mozzarella- the stringy, stretchy Italian cheese- often manipulated and handled throughout various processes to add stretchiness and mealtime novelty.

22. Stretching legs (and muscles) before an athlete runs a race to warm up the muscles.

23.  Nylon- similar to Lycra, a stretchy, man made fabric- body tight- used to create a slimline silhouette.

24. Stretching muscles with warm up exercises before a work out to ensure no muscles are pulled or strained.

25. Similar to yoga- Pilates is an gentle stretching exercise for the body.

TASK V// TYPEFACES (X3 PT SIZES)

Experimenting with various typefaces to visually communicate my word- with three different point sizes- 10pt (average book/magazine pt), 30pt (mid way), and 72pt (1 inch measure on the page).

Perhaps not that interesting as an animal itself- though the motion, and the movement that ducks make on the water could make for a strong visual communicator?

2. BREAD

Obviously not a great example- bread not floating on the water- not a lot of potential in the idea, but good to exhaust all potential avenues nevertheless.
3. BOAT



The bobbing motion on the water produced by the momentum of the boat upon the water could be quite interesting as a "float" motion- could play around with the anchor points as well as the positioning of the word as a whole, or the separate letterforms- manipulating the "current" produced by the waves and the steadiness of the word through the "boat".

4. FOAM SWIMMING LESSON FLOATS




Foam floats are used in swimming lessons in order to help beginners have confidence with floating on the surface of the water.

5. FISHING BAIT




A fishing float- helping the fisherman distinguish when a fish has caught the bait.

6. BUOY



An inflatable object found in seas and oceans, with various uses including an anchoring point and safe water boundary markers, etc.

7. LIFE RING



Life rings are thrown into the water to help overboard passengers/crew members of swimmers, in order to help them float on the surface and prevent accidents/drowning.

8. LIFE JACKET


Life jackets are worn to help aid buoyancey on the surface of the water and prevent drowning- particularly useful when worn by people with disabilities and/or those who cannot swim- a safe aid for those who may not be able to swim when in danger.
 
9. HELIUM



The gas element, Helium, most commonly used with balloons, is pumped into objects to help them float.

10. BALLOONS



See type about helium above- can also temporarily float with air (breath).

Swimming upon the surface of the water to help maintain air circulation and buoyancy.

12. CARNIVAL FLOAT

A style of carnival float- often promoting a business, company or institution as it is paraded in streets during an organised event or street party.

13. ICE CREAM SODA

An ice cream soda- a fizzy, carbonated drink (often Coca Cola) combined with a scoop of ice cream for a creamy, rich drink- upon which the ice cream floats on the top of the drink (aptly nicknamed a "float") until it has melted- popular in America.

14. RUBBER RING



A popular lilo-like tire inflatable used for sitting in/upon and floating on the surface of the water, usually in a swimming pool.

15. LILO


An inflatable lilo (similar to a rubber ring- see above) which is used to help float upon the surface of the water (usually in the sea/swimming pool) and relax- usually sunbathing.

16. CORK




When placed in water, cork, like various other materials, floats.

17. WATER



Water- one of the two major elements (water and gas) which help materials to float- an example above of the boat floating on the surface of the water.

18. GAS




Various types of gases, such as helium, when pumped into objects such as balloons, enable them to float.


19. SNORKELLING


Floating on the surface of the water when snorkelling is important to ensure that air can still be taken through the snorkel mask pipe.

When a cheque is deposited the time in between the deposit and the deposit amount into the physical bank account is called a "float".

Hot Air Balloons are filled with gases in order to help them to float and cruise along the skyline, carrying passengers below in a woven wicker basket.

TASK IV// SITUATIONS

5. Fishing bait floats on the surface of water (to be visible to the fisherman when the bait is caught).

7. Life rings float to prevent "rescuee" from drowning.
 
8. Life jacket is inflated with gas/air to help the "rescuee" avoid danger.

9. Helium is pumped into balloons to make them float.

10. Balloons float temporarily with air, and with helium float long-term/aerial descent.

11. Floating upon the surface of water when swimming.

12. A carnival "float"- showcasing events and organisations and paraded in streets in America in carnivals.
