The finalised submission for the additional, two-day brief for the live competition Leeds College of Art Christmas Card 2012 design, as viewed and judged by marketing (results of the contest are yet to be published). Again, overall I'm quite happy with the design outcomes of the project, particularly considering the turnaround times, however, I wish that I could have produced a high enough quality print and photographic image to feel happy to represent it on my boards as opposed to a vector-based design, which would have ensured more consistency across my boards, as well as being able to apply it directly to my personal and professional design portfolio.
Throughout my design and module submission boards, I was particularly hoping to ensure that all of my work was well-produced and photographed in respect for future additions to my design portfolio upon graduation and seeking more industry experience, so, unfortunately, I was quite disappointed when the images for the Leeds College of Art Christmas Card 2012 live brief (my additional brief in the series) didn't come out as effectively as I would have liked- the colour looking a little dull and washed out, being over-exposed, and not having enough turn around time to have got the cards professionally printed.
Despite this set back, I have gone on to produce simple vector-based designs from the original concept boards submitted to marketing at the time of the brief release, and hope to get the card professionally made and produced at a later date to re-photograph, as I feel, for it's short turnaround time, it was a successful and considered design concept.
My concept boards to go alongside my design for the Leeds College of Art Christmas Card brief, to be submitted before 5PM today (the project's deadline). With delivery notice failure emails returning from sending to the marketing team at the college, I' a little nervous with just two and a half hours before the deadline, but hopefully it'll be something I can resolve imminently. When playing around with the design of the boards, I wasn't happy with the photographed images of the card as I realised the colour quality produced from the print just wasn't strong enough, or representative of the colour that would be produced in professional print. Therefore, I will send along the files of the card to scale with the concept boards, and for my module submission, I look to get the cards professionally printed and photographed in a studio environment for a true image representation. The boards themselves are quite simple, but at this point I don't want to commit to any (personal) branding, as I'm sure it will change in the near future. Therefore, using Helvetica to ensure that the images do the talking. Wish me luck!
Documented and edited photos (taken in the GD studio earlier in the day) of my proposed greetings card design for the Leeds College of Art Christmas Card competition- hopefully here being able to capture the key elements and concept behind the design in a bold, high-impact way, alongside the motion graphics e-card which I designed earlier.
Tomorrow morning I'll work on putting my submission design boards together, of which this will be classed as an additional brief, and will be able to submit to marketing for feedback/competition entry before the 5PM deadline.
My design for the proposed Leeds College of Art Christmas card competition (to be submitted on a concept board later today in time for the brief deadline on Thursday afternoon), again, ensuring consistency is kept with the proposed card design and the existing LCA type (Apercu) used on the prospectus and open day branding.
Although quite simple, I'm happy with the outcome, especially as it only took me around 20 minutes, and being away from After Effects for nearly a year, I thought I would encounter more problems than I did, but, fortunately, it all came back relatively quickly. This has also opened up my methods of production in regards to my design practice, which has been a great (albeit quick) experience with such a short brief deadline.
Again, I've received some good feedback from the design, and I'll look forward to putting on the work together a little later on today.
A very quick mock up design for the 5 second motion graphics piece I am proposing to put together tomorrow for my submission for the Leeds College of Art Christmas Card brief. In a fade in, I hope to 'reveal' the spelling of the word 'Art' within 'Season's Greetings', as well as a note from the college at the end of the motion e-card. Something quite simple, though hopefully effective, I'm going to go down to the AV room for the drop in session tomorrow morning where I'll hopefully be able to refresh my memory in regards to my After Effects knowledge and be able to produce something ready to send by Thursday morning.
This afternoon I managed to get into a last-minute print slot (as James will be occupied for the rest of the week) to print out my design for the concept pitch of the Leeds College of Art Christmas card brief. For a quick digital print, I'm quite happy with the colour and professionalism of the design which I will photograph both in a studio and lifestyle shoot tomorrow afternoon/evening to hopefully catch it most effectively in time for the competition submission on Thursday (which I will present on a concept board(s)). Tomorrow I also hope to work on a short, and simple motion graphics after effects design to be submitted as part of the email/ecard design, working with Matt down in the AV room to help me create a design simply and effectively. I also was lucky enough to receive a lot of good feedback from friends and peers today, so I'm really excited to submit my design, and hopefully gain recognition from the marketing department.

This afternoon we got sent an email through from the marketing team at Uni in regards to potentially putting forward a design for the University corporate Christmas card, in a quick, two-day turnaround brief. Although I (clearly) have A LOT on at the moment, I thought it could be a great opportunity to get my work seen by industry, as well as experiencing the quick deadline needs, hopefully to motivate me a little more in regards to quick decision making with both my dissertation and design practice module submissions (as well as having more work to show for the module, too!)
From the brief above, as posted, we were given the choice to focus on 'Merry Christmas' or 'Season's Greetings', and, looking at Season's Greetings and the need to communicate art, the letters spelling 'ART' jumped straight to me, and I decided to focus on a type-driven and corporate style, with a playful twist. To ensure consistency is met, I chose the typeface Apercu (by Colophon) that is currently used for the University branding (prospectus/clubs, etc). Before noticing the dimension requirements, I made a quick mock up from my home printer of the design, and although the colours are obviously a little faded, I feel that the design as printed in digital print tomorrow morning (in drop in) will look quite effective, along with an envelope design which I will be proposing, matching the colour scheme of the card.
Tomorrow I also hope to work on a simple After Effects moving image e-card design to complete the product range for the short deadline, and to have design boards made and sent via email by midday Thursday at the very latest.
