In the workshop session today, we looked at the entire range of self promotional designs in context, as pinned up on the studio walls. It was a great opportunity to see how everyone had visually communicated themselves and their design practice, with a diversity and mixture of designs. Below, written notes and general feedback as given in a critique by tutor, Fred Bates.
General feedback
- Consider placement on the wall, and how we "read"- left to right, top to bottom
- Bright coloured designs stand out well
- Reverse out type for a bolder effect
- White space can be used effectively and creatively, but don't hide behind it
- The designs will be on the board for a year, but may develop throughout that time
- If we don't stand out against the groups designs, we wont stand out against thousands of graduates, 2012/13
- Strong promotion is fantastic, but not essentially for face-to-face networking
Specific feedback
(Although unaware of whose design belonged to whom, Fred pointed out several designs to discuss for both positives and negatives, below, my feedback)
- "Really liked" the business card design, "One of my favourites" (Hooray for me)
- Simple, to the point
- Bold, clear, clean
- Polite, friendly
- Can be seen from a long distance- will engage industry professionals/visitors without being overwhelming
Issues to resolve
- Not practical as a mailout due to bind
- Perhaps add evidence of work- more engaging/telling of my design practice
- Explore more creative outcomes for promotional media
- Express my ambitions to work in branding/type/editorial/photography more as I move away from illustration/image design throughout the year
