Design Practice III//Contacting Carys Re Touchline Facebook.

Sending over the work for the ballet society submission boards to Carys today, hopefully to generate some feedback on the brief, and, if not, then just to be able to give her the opportunity to see the work I've done for the module, and potentially open the doors to work together in the future, potentially working on the digital design outcomes (website, online shop, social networking media adaptions, etc.) that we had previously discussed, but, unfortunately, due to time constraints, I simply didn't have the time to complete.

Design Practice III//LUU Ballet Society Twitter Page.

With consideration for the ever-impending deadline and module submission, unfortunately, I've had to cut back on some of the outcomes I was hoping to produce.

This evening I started work on developing the Leeds University Union Ballet Society Twitter and Big Cartel pages, to help promote the society, as well as easing communications and networks with it's existing members.

However, due to technical faults the process was taking extra-ordinarily long, and at this point, it's something I just can't prioritise with as (some) submission boards are yet to be designed and printed, briefs re-written, etc, although it's something I will certainly consider extending upon, and perhaps pursuing outside of the module submission and into the New Year.

This has lead on to a change in my submission boards, reducing the original four boards for the brief down to three, having removing the digital design board within the series.

Design Practice III//Jessie Leong Photography Mock Up/Design Developments.

Unfortunately, due to obvious time constraints (with the module submission around thirty hours away!) I haven't been able to develop the jessieleong.com website for the Jessie Leong Photography brief to the extent that I originally hoped and intended for.

For the sake of module boards for submission, I have generated some quick mock up designs for the web proposal, following the same suit as the printed portfolio with the black and white title page, with full colour, rich images as the drop down menus and projects are selected, something which I have discussed and planned with Jessie in the past.

With both a Twitter and Facebook account prepared for Jessie this module (though not documented on the board for professionalism reasons, more than anything- in both business and aesthetics), hopefully this will be enough to tide her over until we can work together again for the FMP module.

Design Practice III//LUU Ballet Society Facebook.

With very little action on my part (having the existing Facebook account in place), admittedly, the Facebook page for the Leeds University Ballet Society is coming together with it's new brand logo put in place, and now with the addition of the photograph(s) of Carys, the Ballet Society President taking during the hoodie drop-off session yesterday (images taken by Jessie Leong, later edited by me).

This afternoon I'm hoping to work on more aspects of the Ballet Society digital networks including a proposed Big Cartel shop and Twitter page.

Design Practice III//Jessie Leong Photography Watermarked Images.

Finally got round to completing the watermarking and uploading of images for the Jessie Leong Photography Facebook Page.
Feeling really good as all of Jessie's work is finally starting to come together, creating the entire package of both formal and informal brand outcomes which I feel will really successfully promote her design practice if used well, and hopefully will lead her onto even more design opportunities, commissions and experiences as a result of promoting her work in such a way.

Design Practice II//Jessie Leong Photography Custom CSS.

Starting to make developments for the customisation of the CSS and template layout for Jessie Leong's website, looking at using the Elena Kulkovia existing template and editing it to the specific existing branding and design used for Jessie's work.

We decided to use Cargo as an easy and economical way of Jessie to keep up to date and upload her work with ease (after I teach her the ropes of the site) as well as having another platform to network and communicate with others.

Working on replicating the bold black type on white design with a photography-heavy (of course) layout and content I hope to have the designs completed by Sunday to have resolved Jessie's project, just waiting for the delivery of her portfolio and to finalise the watermarking of images to upload to her social networking media.

Design Practice III//Cargo Custom URL Set-Up.

This evening I sent along screenshots in order to direct Jessie to set up her Cargo with a custom URL so we could start to put in place her design content and be able to use a specifically chosen layout design (which we will go on to adapt with HTML/CSS setting).

Just waiting for Jessie to submit her payments so I can make a start on the edits. Despite how much I've enjoyed working with Jessie on her brief, I do think I've become subject to getting too involved with a brief/offering the client too much. By mid-week I know I certainly need to make a significant progress on my other briefs, some of which I have barely touched.

ALL SYSTEMS GO.

Design Practice III//Leeds College of Art E-Card.

My design for the proposed Leeds College of Art Christmas card competition (to be submitted on a concept board later today in time for the brief deadline on Thursday afternoon), again, ensuring consistency is kept with the proposed card design and the existing LCA type (Apercu) used on the prospectus and open day branding.

Although quite simple, I'm happy with the outcome, especially as it only took me around 20 minutes, and being away from After Effects for nearly a year, I thought I would encounter more problems than I did, but, fortunately, it all came back relatively quickly. This has also opened up my methods of production in regards to my design practice, which has been a great (albeit quick) experience with such a short brief deadline.

Again, I've received some good feedback from the design, and I'll look forward to putting on the work together a little later on today.

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//Screengrabs from Idents & Title Sequence.

A selected series of screengrabs from each of my final motion graphic 'Top 10 Things...' project outcome- with my series of 4 x 10 second idents as well as 1 x 60 second title sequence. Each Issuu document shows a selection of stills from each of the outcomes- take at significant points in the sequence which provide a post-production key frame timeline- a really interesting way to see how my initial hand-rendered storyboards have evolved, changed, and influenced my digital design- as well as ensuring the pace of my idents is reasonably consistent throughout the series, and so on.

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//Final Ident 2 'SPECIES'.

Clearly rushed and plain, I'm quite disappointed with the results of my fourth and final ident to be made for the module hand in. Originally, with another completely different idea in mind, I hadn't accounted for such great changes to have to be made and this, and is evident, was a complete last-minute job, again, adding to the disappointment- however, hopefully my development and consideration for the previous concept of this ident, as well as my development through storyboards and digital experimentation will account for this laclustre effort!

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//Ident 4, 'Dive' REMADE.

After very foolishly (and accidentally) loosing the original After Effects file for Ident #4, 'Dive', I thought I would be okay with my saved QuickTime file- unfortunately, I later realised that the vignette background that I had now used consistently throughout my designs wasn't present on this ident. I could have left the design, but it would definitely be a bug bearer for me. Unfortunately, with restricted time, the ident isn't quite as slick or as smooth as the original, but it does look more uniformed with the rest of the series. In the future I'll ensure that I don't make silly mistakes like these again- utilising highly valuable time, though, at least this time I could see what changes I felt were necessary to make- and did some copying and pasting from my finalised time sequence (to be blogged asap)- easy(er) peasy (er).

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//So long, and thanks for all the fish.

JUST remembered this song- and realised how amazing it would have been to experiment with this in my motion graphics work- for the pure hilarity of it alone (penguin sure do like their fish, after all).

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//Ident 2 Test.

An initial experiment for ident number 2- in which I wanted to create a 'swim' scene- with penguins jumping over the waves as the rocked in motion back and forth before catching fish in their mouths with a jump over the waters- however, on testing this design out digitally, and playing around with the motion of the waves to the rythm of my audio soundtrack, I really wasn't very keen on the outcome- all looking rather forced and static- as well as a difficulty in establishing a colour palette and suitable gradients for the design- at this late stage, as opposed to battling with it further, I will, again, go on to create a new design (perhaps taking a section from my title sequence) in the hopes that I can create something memorable, unique and fitting to my subject matter and chosen
target audience.

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//Title Sequence/FINALISED.

Moving on with the development of my title sequence, I wanted to ensure that I got the design finalised and complete as soon as possible to provide me with any necessary time afterwards to make amendments from given feedback or my own personal critiquing. Again, I found myself in a position where time wasn't in abundance- again, completely my own fault, but at very least this has made me realise just how much time and effort actually goes into designing and finalising the motion graphics designs, and, if I were to embark on such a project again it would give me a full understanding and basis of what to expect.

Continuing from my last developments, I realised that I wanted to ensure a continuity throughout my idents and my title sequence- finally starting to establish a visual outcome I would be happy with (largely based on what has become, I think, my strongest design in Ident #3 'Diet') and running this throughout my series- an example here, changing the background to match the radial gradients throughout- also darkening the vignette snowflake background to make the colour palette more suited and consistent throughout the 60 second design.

Another one of my most significant ideas, around this point was the addition of type- created and displayed in a style inspired by a video I found (an ode to Falmouth, which can be seen on my Design Context blog)- I tried experimenting with one of the techniques we were taught during our After Effects workshop, animating the appearance and position of text- though even this subtle effect felt a little too flashy and distracting from the main image (which is the intended appeal for my target audience)- also tried a "blink" effect with opacity- again, felt too much like a flashy powerpoint presentation than a subtly styled motion graphics effect.

Still keen to use type as a narrative for my images- and to give a little more evidence as to what the 'Top 10' may in fact be (whilst not giving away too much information), I experimented with my existing typeface used throughout my designs- in Italic and Italic Bold. Although I feel the bold case suits the character and target audience of the outcome more effectively, it definitely proves to be more distracting from the image- I wanted something subtle, not overpowering and visually noisy.

Keeping a consistent grid position- inside the title safe zone to ensure it won't get lost on any monitors/ screens, and remains readable and legible.
I ending up also deciding upon using a mask layer over a directional line as my method of communication for each of the 'top ten' words- kept the style looking informative, clean, but still interactive and of course, with motion, which will help to keep my restless target audience a little more entertained than they could have potentially otherwise been.

After several hours and what feels like a million and one potential screenshot opportunities, I started developing a stronger idea of the visual identity for the title sequence and the outcome that I hoped to achieve. Of course, as aforementioned- time is a major factor, so there is a lot less originality in context with the idents than I would have liked- but at least this way I know that the designs are visually clear, connected and consistent with one another.

Putting the sequences together- here, adding ident #1- colony, to the sequence- still a lot of development needed at this stage, however- but an encouraging sight to see the design becoming more fluid, and the sequences working well along side one another in terms of timing, audio and visual consistency.

A much more complete outcome- here, utilising my audio rhythm to affect the motion and speed of the sequence in terms of mask layers for my text lines, and, of course, the transitions between the separate idents which make up the title sequence as a whole. Reasonably happy with the design- but the Chinstrap and Adelie penguin during the 'species' sequence section aren't entirely straight and aligned with one another- time to get the rulers and grids out!

The final design- again, as previously stated, there are numerous things that I would like to change about the design, or feel that I would certainly change, if time were more of a luxury. However, considering the constraints of time in balance with other responsibilities both in and out of college,  I can say that I am reasonably happy with what I have achieved in this module- and feel that despite not necessarily having the outcome I aspired to, I have worked hard to have as an effective and successful design as possible- and I hope this is evidenced enough.

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//Design Proposal Boards.

My three A2 presentation boards to (hopefully) print and showcase when returning back to Uni on Monday- proposed details for the 'Top 10...' project, including content, context, and target audience. Generally happy with the information put across, again, if given more time, I would have stylised the boards more effectively, and in a more considered format- for the moment sticking to conventional typefaces (Futura Bold in particular for it's strong, geometric lines which will suit the style of my vector illustrations)- don't want to go too gimmicky with ice as I want to showcase the variety of penguins- some species of which live in Galapagos, Africa, etc.

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//Design Proposal Presentation.

My completed presentation for the return to Uni on Monday for 'Top 10...Things you need to know about penguins'- kept it quite simple and matter-of-fact, to work with the bold, geometric, illustrative vector style I intend to work in for my final designs. Not too busy with terms of designs at the moment, as I didn't want to risk this "diverting" my creativity later on (as I have found that I often get too influenced by early design ideas,
and need to experiment more).

Design Production for Digital//Top 10//Colour Palette.

Research and devlopment for my colour palette for the 'Design Production for Digital//Top 10 Things...You need to know about penguins' brief- using existing colour references of visual communication significance to determine a suitable palette. As well as existing references, I used feedback from various surveys to find that king and emperor penguins were regarded as the most representative species in the penguin animal group, therefore, will primarily use them as a visual reference (emperor penguin chick also included) within my motion graphic designs.

I have also included the colouring for the CBBC logo (the channel which I will propose my programme to be broadcasted on) as well as trying to keep the colours vivid and bright to suit and engage the 5-11 aged target audience.

All photographic images sourced from various links in Google Images.

Design Production for Digital//Top 10...//Nat Geo Wild Ident Screengrabs.

Researching examples of ident screengrabs from the Nat Geo Wild channel, the channel I have chosen to propose my programme 'Top 10 Things To Know About Penguins...' to be broadcasted on, and which I will brand my idents and title sequence for.
Currently, the designs are quite in depth and photographic (examples shown below), though there are some instances of animation- what looks like a combination of After Effects and Cinema 4D (for this project I will be solely using After Effects), so there's potential to make a more vector-based design to sit alongside the existing idents. Ideally, I would have chosen to broadcast my programme on 'Nat Geo Junior', though feel that the broadcasting countries (not yet in many English-speaking countries) would restrict my visual communication and translation and move away from the "live brief" feel of the project.
I will go on to research and link examples of Nat Geo Wild idents in motion graphics/video format on a later blog post to see whether my designs would still suit, and feel relevant to the channel's existing style and visual outcomes.

Made some quick Gifs on the Gif- making and sharing website 'Gickr' of my final five storyboards for the Silent Movie project. Not great in terms of quality (late night/dark room= high flash= evidence of my shoddy colouring skills) but portray the motion design, sequential and temporal thinking quite simply before taking these in for development and finalisation in the Adobe After Effects software.

Design Production for Digital//Silent Movie//Sequential Storyboarding.

*Incomplete* storyboard from a workshop on 13th December (only about three weeks late... lost pens, can't find pens, can't buy new pens... have to make do with lack of colour- would otherwise be bright yellow solid colour for my backgrounds)- spreading one storyboard and it's key frames across five 60cm timeline lines to make the most out of the available space and multiple frames. In hinesight, I think too many key frames were used here- repeating a stretching motion (like an elastic band- video recording examples will be posted asap)- could have cut out at least three frames- although, aside from that, reasonably happy with the design for this storyboard.

Now, I will go on to develop more storyboards for the next week (hand-rendered and digital) before going on to develop and create my finalised After Effects motion graphics designs.
