Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Concept Workshop.

In today's workshop session with Fred, John and Jane, we worked on some fundamentals of concept development based upon the briefs that we have found (that I finished and blogged yesterday), and what we hope to achieved with this self-initiated brief through a series of short writing and brainstorming tasks.

5 THINGS I WANT TO DO

1. Illustrative design (Paper craft? Laser cut?)
2. Illustrative typography
3. Editorial & Publishing (Children's literature, Grimm's Fairy Tales, Puffin/Penguin brief)
4. Combination of print and screen-based design (Print/eBooks)
5. Promotional campaign through a branded design range

5 THINGS I NEED TO DO

1. Extensive research into classic fairy tales v contemporary versions.
2. Evaluate the current marketplace and needs.
3. Experiment with various design outcomes appropriate to my target audience.
4. Evaluate ways in which product range(s) can be categorised.
5. Evaluate my considered target market and appropriateness of content/context.

5 REASONS WHY

1. To gain a full understanding of the stories and how to most effectively visually communicate them.
2. Image/Illustration is a strength, although my heavily vector-based portfolio needs more variation.
3. Type as image is a recently new interest that I would like to explore further.
4. The sector I ultimately want to work in ([children's] literature) upon graduating, need more design experience.
5. Research for a well-rounded and extensive project outcome.

PERSONAL SKILLS I WANT TO DEVELOP

1. Confidence in my ability.
2. Confidence in my time management and organisation.
3. The ability to see through an idea to its full potential with a high level of motivation and determination.
4. Confidence in exploring and documenting design processes to establish the most appropriate design outcome.

PRACTICAL SKILLS I WANT TO DEVELOP

1. Visual communication.
2. Illustrative design variation- sticking to my strengths, yet exploring outside of my usual "style".
3. Laser cutting and paper crafting techniques.

PROCESSES I WANT TO INVESTIGATE

1. Laser cutting design.
2. Vector-based illustrative design.
3. Hand rendering typography and the anatomy of typography

PRODUCTS I WANT TO PRODUCE

1. Range of illustrative books (cover and interior)- Grimm Brothers Fairy Tales.
2. Range of printed packaging to act as an additional promotional tool- gift wrap, bags, etc.
3. Design eBooks to be read on kindles and ipads.
4. Range of promotional posters for a range of environments- outdoor advertising, mailshots, retail environments, etc.
5. Bookmarks.

CONTEXTS TO EXPLORE

1. Children's illustration (editorial) and publishing.
2. Digital literature media (eBooks, iPad, Kindle, etc).
3. Illustrative typography (In balance with illustrative design).
4. Promotional design.
