Image//Editorial//'Relationship Maths: Facebook'.

Images and design development below for the editorial image making week-long brief, this particular design sit alongside the article 'Relationship Maths: Facebook'- all images conceptual and contextual reference and inspiration was generated from the original text (more information of which can be found in other posts for the module on my Design Practice blog).

My original concept for this design was to really play upon the 'Maths' element of the article- and during the briefing session came up with the idea of creating a heart- shape from creating a vector illustration of pieces from a geometry set- two portractors and two set squares forming a visual representation the "relationship" as well as the maths.
However, when the files were sent through to place our images into, I realised just how inappropriately scaled my design was, and that all of the information and detail would be lost if I were to decrease the size to the space provided- a change of direction needed.

Colour picking out the well-known 'Facebook blue' from the website banner, I started applying this to illustrations (using the circular template given in the article layout) I started to add more geometric/maths- related objects- pencils, rulers, compasses- trying out equations from love hearts- just looked a little messy and detail wasn't very clear in the designs due to the scale.

I quickly resolved the issue with the scale by changing the design to something a little simpler and more visually representative of facebook (particularly after discovering that the 'Relationship Maths' title was permanent in the newspaper, with just the number of the article changing, such as "21. FACEBOOK")- using the 'like' icon as a matching pair- almost affirming the relationship- with the heart icon in the same minimal colour palette.

A very quick and easy design to generate, though simple and effective- again, I would have liked to have created something a little more creative and conceptual, but a definite experience in regards to trying something new- for me, a really clean, minimal design.
